They have new rain coats to wear, you see. And when there isn't enough rain for decent puddle jumping, the next best thing is drawing with sidewalk chalk. It makes for great water colour textures.

We have been walking around the pond looking for baby frogs. The children and I are wondering if they are any bigger than last time we saw them. We have heard lots of bullfrog sounds, but have not yet spotted any baby frogs. We've seen some dragonflies and lots of beautiful flowers. We also found a caterpillar egg. Here's a picture of Jennie and my daughter Emma, and my daycare kids. I hope you are all having a beautiful day today just like we are.

We were lucky enough to actually spot eight teeny tiny baby frogs on the pathway. They were so tiny that they were smaller than most of the children's fingers.

We were very careful to look out for new frogs and it was very exciting for all of us.

One of the children said lookout for frogs!

Another child sad look out for ice!

Then another child said look at for dynamite!

Here are some pictures of the baby frogs.

Welcome to official April weather. This photo is not from today, but I love the rain boots.
Rain boots are such a fun part of playing in the rain. We love to splash in the puddles, and sing rain songs.
Sometimes we play in front of my house in the rain, with the garage open so that anyone who forgot to bring their rain clothes can still play outside (sort of) by using sidewalk chalk on the garage floor.

Splash pants are a good way to help children get to play in the puddles without getting their pants wet, and they aren't as bulky or as insulating as snow pants. Don't have any? Please make sure you have a couple of extra spare pants packed in your child's bag for back up. Puddles are uniquely magnetic to children, LOL.Jennie's Club Househttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12932034693840009964noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4618480219105075090.post-26160186517523633042013-04-02T12:52:00.001-07:002013-04-02T13:14:15.311-07:00Today's Show and Tell

For circle time, the children picked out some of their current favourite toys to use for Show and Tell. After the Good Morning Train song, the children took turn telling each other what they liked about their toys. I was so proud of the way they each waited till their turn to share. They really enjoy participating in Show and Tell.

At snack time, I made some steamed broccoli for us to have lots of energy before we head outside to play. After the kids tried a little bit, I exclaimed that they were having a party in their tummy, and we started to sing that Yo Gabba Gabba song. They got so excited that they ate ALL the broccoli. Then they asked me to make MORE broccoli, so they could have another party in their tummy! I was impressed.

For our outdoor time today, we walked over to the pond to see if we could welcome home some geese from their winter migration. We found two geese in the first pond.

At the next pond, we noticed that some of it was melted, while other parts of the pond had freshly fallen snow on the ice. We decided that it looked like the pond had polka dots.
We are sharing in the excitement with our little friend, as he tells us what it's like to become a big brother.

Since many babies come from eggs, we decided that today's story time would start with Eggs, by Marilyn Singer.

While reading, we learned about many interesting facts, like how the Trichogramma wasp lays its eggs inside the eggs of other moths and flies.

Or how the elephant birds eggs were way bigger than an ostrich egg. It can fit more than a hundred chicken eggs in one elephant egg! Wow wee!

The children and I have been doing endless colour pages, cut & paste, glitter sprinkling, and number/colour/shape matching. Today we were given some blank coloring puzzles from one of our parents. We were excited to get started on them, and here is one of the photos.

Today for a treat, I have the children some Veggie Stix. They quickly started to call them "Crunchy Sticks".

They liked them so much, that everyone asked for seconds!

These fun snacks definitely pass my kids' test of approval. I didn't expect so many kids to be shouting "More!"

Now for the parent test:
These snacks are made Good Health Natural Foods, and are packed with vitamins A, D, E, K, Thiamine, B6, and Biotin. There is also Vitamin C and Iron, with smaller amounts of folate and magnesium.

Zero trans fat!
Zero sugar!

Some of the natural ingredients that the children wouldn't suspect are things like
-rice flour
-tomato
-spinach
-Green pepper
-parsley
-paprika
-celery
-broccoli
-beets
-carrots
-shiitake mushrooms

Wow, how awesome is that?Jennie's Club Househttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12932034693840009964noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4618480219105075090.post-25585810437650385942013-03-07T13:38:00.001-08:002013-04-10T11:32:58.003-07:00Our First Signs of SpringOn our walk today, we looked and listened for the first signs of spring. We listened to the birds that seemed to be everywhere. We saw a black squirrel in the forest.

We watched the stroller wheels leave water tracks on the sidewalks behind us from the melting snow. The children asked me how the wheels do that. It gave us the opportunity to talk about transfer, which they liked so much that "transfer" became our word of the day. We stepped in snow with our boots, then walked on the dry sidewalks and watch the boot prints that were transferred from the snow to our boots, then to the ground and then melted into water. This meant several minutes experimenting with snow and water prints.

We listened some more, and herd the sound of trickling water. We noticed that it was coming from the roofs, and then from the street. The children liked playing find the sound. There were some good rooftops that were demonstrating a quick melt. I took the children to the snow bank in front of our house, and we did our own experiment with snow. We left out three
different sized snowballs on the sidewalk
We then guessed, after finding out that spring makes snow softer as it melts, wether these snow balls would still be there after nap time. Some of us guessed that they would be all melted, while others guessed that they might be smaller and mushier.

Something special we discovered on our way home was the tree trunk that had some of its bark missing. This teachable moment had us talking about the woodland creatures in our area, and how they survive through the winter. We looked around and noticed that there weren't any yummy green leaves or foliage to eat in winter time, and guessed that bark was probably not the yummiest thing to eat. But it would still give the animals the energy they needed until spring grows new plants and berries.
In the middle of the room there was a huge (or massive if you are a kid) cardboard house! It was just waiting to be explored and colored. I can't wait to see how it looks by the end of the week. We had lots of "Peek-a-boo!" Going on through the windows. Did you know that our house even comes with both front and back doors! It makes for a great game of "where am I?".

Then for outdoor play. This was the snowfall we were all waiting for. A but crunchy on top made it all the more interesting! We inspected the snow up close, and found it had. Neat little layer of ice droplets on top of the snow. See the photo for closer detail.

Jennie broke up the ice into what the children call 'snow cookies'. Then the children used mini shovels to play with them. Most of the children take snow from the lawn and pile it onto the sidewalk. Then Jennie moves it from there onto a nice big pile on the front corner of the yard for them to jump on.

To answer answer a question you might be thinking about, it only counts as child labour if (1) they aren't having fun, and (2) if work actually gets done. Believe it or not, the little shovels actually makes more work for Jennie when clearing the sidewalk (several times, LoL).

I was greeted with super duper birthday hugs, and home made cards! It was the perfect start to my day. One of the kids even brought me a Starbucks caramel macchiato. Yummy, yummy!

For outdoor time the kids wanted to play with the shovels. Since my sidewalk was already shoveled, we decided to go and shovel random sidewalks. It was fun.

Once back inside, the kids decided to make me more birthday cards with the new stickers I bought them. I have a great collection of birthday cards now!

After nap time, I surprised them with Sesame Street themed cupcakes. It was a hit with everyone!

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Jennie's Club Househttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12932034693840009964noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4618480219105075090.post-30951766561822067572013-01-23T12:25:00.001-08:002013-01-23T12:25:14.855-08:00Snow ArtToday we went out for some snow fun.
The kids were hoping to make snow men. Unfortunately, there wasn't packing snow out there, just the powdery fluffy stuff. But it's great for other things!

We walked down by the pond to see what it would look like today. The children confirmed that all the Canada Geese have now indeed left the pond for the winter. Only a couple of crows were in the trees.

We made some snow angels, and took photos for mom and dad.

Then we found some sticks lying about and turned them into long snow pencils. The kids had some giggles while drawing each other trapped in clan ow circles. They also drew pathways and pictures in the snow.

Then we played in the front yard with the mini snow shoe cels to try and make a snow pile to jump in on our front lawn. We didn't have enough to meet their goal (aim high), but they did have a blast while trying.

We then went inside for some warm cinnamon raisin oatmeal made by Jennie.
Today we walked to the park.
On the way there, we investigated a mini 'river' that had been carved there by water erosion from the recent rain/freezing rain events.
