Outdoor play: Snow garden

PD Day: time to get messy!

One of our activities today was experimenting with cornstarch. First, we put our hands in dry, so feel the substance in it's powdered state. Next, we added water and let the kids mix it with their fingers. They liked that. :)

Then it was time to dig in! The harder they pushed, it seemed the mixture squeezed back! Then, when they held a clump of it still in their hands, it melted back into goop!

At nap time, I'm going to show the kids a short myth busters clip which has a great visual explanation of the molecular action of this super cool matter.

Later, we'll be back out into the snow! Thank goodness it snowed so much last night! Perfect day for snow play!

Scholar's choice had their midnight madness sale, so I stocked up on some new educational games and activities. One of them is this new magnetic ABC tracing board. The magnetic pen let's the children trace their letters, and shiny little balls fill in the spaces. But they are stuck inside the board, so we don't need to worry about them scattering. :)

My little Climbers

Here we are at the park, playing on the Praying Mantis structure.

This morning we are exploring around for things to show how we've grown. For example, last year this toddler could not climb up the steps - this year, she can do 2 steps all by herself (but 2 is enough on this apparatus). This 5 year old is showing me different parts of the playground and saying, "Look Jennie! I couldn't reach THIS high when I was four!". He's so proud of himself, finding so many ways to see how he's grown.

Fish Wish

As we were opening up our parcel from Cornwall, England, the kids said "I wish there was some chocolate in here! Their wish came true! I don't know how she did it, but our swap pal Pip managed to find milk chocolate sardines! The kids thought this was highly amusing! It was hilarious to find these, and I remember thinking to myself how fun it would have been if I'd found chocolate to send out to our swap pal. We didn't find any though.

There is also an assorted package of chocolate fish, that we'll share on another day.

Pip wrote out some of her adventures from cornwall for us on a card with a fish painting on the front by a local (UK) artist. The children enjoyed hearing about what Pip does over there. The toddlers of course have their own summary of her adventures that they have been telling back to me. Emma thinks Pip goes swimming with the fish (which wasn't mentioned in the card).

We were also given an award-winning picture book named The Mousehole Cat by Antonia Barber and nicola Bayley. I will let the kids take turns bringing this book home to show parents.

The other things we received from Pip were some fish stickers, a cool coaster with a cartoon fish pie, and a fish bookmark of Pilchards.

I hope Pip likes her fish package as much as we like ours! Thanks Pip!

The kids are pretending they are on a boat, and are expecting a big storm to come! We are enjoying having the park all to ourselves this morning - well, Nicole and her kiddies have joined us too. We are playing tag together, and swinging, and will be heading back to Jennie's for circle time.

News flash: next wednesday will be Silly Face Day! Instead of the usual us sending you funny faces, we are daring YOU (the parents) to send US an email during the day of your funny face to share with the kids. Morning is best, if you can. Let's see how silly we can get... :)

Our Bookmark swap

One of our flat mail swaps has been a bookmark trade for the children.

How it works is this: we got an envelope in the mail with several bookmarks inside. Then we went to the book store to pick out a few bookmarks to put in the envelope, and pick out which bookmarks the children would like to keep for themselves (and me, too!). Then we send the parcel on it's way to the next person on our list who is participating in this theme.

The ones we chose to keep were: a flower one, a neat horse-stamp bookmark made of stamps from Sierra Leone (I really liked this one, but one of the kids claimed it before me). They also chose the Emergency preparedness check list one, the knitted pencil, the Wizard of Oz, and the hand made flower & butterfly one - this one isn't in the photo though.

The children really enjoy getting special things for them in the mail, and this kind encourages sharing as we always send something back out!

Post-school fire drill

Just as the bell was about to go, someone pulled a fire drill at school. Us parents stood to the side to watch the excited children file out with their teachers. Some of them had their back packs on, and weren't sure if they were supposed to go home or line up.

It was entertaining to many people, but good practise.

The kids were excited to see a package in the mail on our way home from the park. We opened it at home, and they were happy to see it's the first of a few cereal themed beach towels we sent away for with special offers on General Mills Cereal boxes. Our goal was to collect all five, but I haven't seen the offer the last few times I went to get cereal. 4 out of 5 is pretty good though!

When storms leave mud...

We make the best of it! No, not mud pies (today), dino tracks!

We got some sticks of different sizes, and I showed the kids how to make a track. They caught on very quick, and made up their own prints on the mud. The waves on the semi dried up mud make it look awesome! Almost like we discovered an unknown dino dig right here in town!

Our new puzzle

This is the new Hide and Seek puzzle we got at Scholar's choice last night. The children couldn't wait to open it up today!

They loved putting it together, and then we got to play hide and seek! This puzzle comes with a bonus poster, and lots of flash cards that show a picture of something for you to take turns finding items of. There are 48 cards, including a few phonetic cards (find something that begins with a B).

This is a great game for both preschool (with parental support) or kindergarten aged children. It does say for ages 5 and up on the box, but it's easy enough to gear activities in this kit to younger ones.

Later this morning, we will be going to the park for our picnic lunch. Thank you very much to the mommy who brought some extra treats for us to share. :)

Father's Day Activities: Me and My Dad

We will be continuing our Father's Day theme this week, with stories, songs, and activities about dads.

For Show and Tell at circle time, I will be encouraging the children to bring in a story they would like to share about their daddy.

This could be a photo (feel free to email it to me if you would like) of a special trip you and your child took together, or just some fun around the neighbourhood watching the birds at the pond. It could also be a souvenir your child may like to share, or a fishing trophy.

Also, if you have a picture of "Daddy and Me" that your child could use (optional) for our special craft this week, it would be greatly appreciated.

Easy breezy days

This morning we went to foxglove park, where the children are climbing on the praying mantis. The older children yell out, "Quick! Jenn, take a picture!" And then they climb into as many poses as they can hold on to while practically rock climbing. Gosslings on the move

I can't believe they are getting this close!
We parked our wagon by the pond to look at the black birds. The toddlers thought the birds were eating the water. We spotted several birds in the low grass, or on water logs.
As we sat here quietly, the group of gosslings slowly came closer and closer, but stopped about 15 feet away to eat grass. It was so nice to watch, and the children were speechless! The geese were so comfortable near us that some of them sat down to preen themselves.

There was a lot of action at the pond this morning. We watched the family of geese play a game in the water, splashing and chasing each other. It was like they were playing Duck, Duck, Goose! All the little babies ducking in and out of the water. Such a sight!

Tuesday morning playgroup

This morning we went out to the park for awhile, and met some new friends to play with. It was pretty hot compared to yesterday, so the favourite activity there today was the swing. It made a nice breeze. Then we went for our Tuesday morning play group at The Gathering Place across the street. The children were happy to see some of their friends over there as well.

For craft this morning, we decorated cut outs of butterflies and dinosaurs with crayons and stickers.

For lunch today we are having tri-colour vegetable fusilli.

This afternoon, we will be blowing bubbles outside, as well as playing with more sidewalk chalk.

This morning the children and I enjoyed getting a little messy with our sidewalk paint. It's water soluble, so if it rains before this afternoon parents might not get a chance to see it in person. A train for our train song

This after playing in the backyard all morning (swing set, gardening, and lots of sandbox play), we went inside for some circle time songs. When I announced that it was time to get ready for the Good Morning Train song, the children had a great idea! They decided to make with the foam shapes, a real train to ride on for our song.

Sand box is ready for play!

Today the children and I had a parade walk with several of our playmates to walmart for play sand, bubbles, seeds, and new sand box toys! They were very happy to help me pick out the new toys, and some snacks for on the way home. The new seeds we picked out were peas (to grow and eat) and a variety of sunflower seeds. We also picked up a new supply of sun block for this season.

They were more than pleased to help me test out the new toys when we arrived back at Jennie's Place. We opted for a picnic lunch outside to take advantage of the nice weather.

The children were playing hot and cold to find their bunnies. They took turns hiding one for their friend, then telling their friend warm or cold to help their friend find the chocolate bunny. This one was found in the doctor's play kit.

Wet/dry experiments

April showers bring May flowers. But they also bring opportunities to experiment with water. We will be looking at how things are affected by rain, as well as things that behave differently when wet or dry.

For example, we played with sidewalk chalk last week outside when it was sunny. We brought water with us to show how the chalk's texture changes on a wet sidewalk.

Today we are using sidewalk chalk indoors on our chalk board to see how chalk draws on it both dry, then after the board has been wiped with a wet cloth.

Today in our Easter theme activities, we will continue to dye Easter eggs, this time the children will be using crayons to learn about how colours change when dipping from one to the next.

Today we had a postcard arrive all the way from Australia. The children were happy to read all about the zoo on the other side of the world. They enjoyed hearing about the giant pandas that are on loan from China, as well as checking out the Koala stamp.
Today was a big day for mail, as we also got a parcel all the way from Washington from one of our swap pals. She sent us lots of goodies. Perfect treat for the end of the week. There was enough for everyone - above is a photo of the children showing some of the gummy bugs we received. There was also a nice letter from Washington, and some blank greeting cards for us to decorate, and some pretty butterfly paper for us to use. There was also a bag of Cracker Jacks popcorn, a lilac scented candle that we all smelled - this reminded us what spring will soon smell like... it reminded me of the lilac tree we always pass on Activa Ave on our way to the park. So nice.... and some Sonoma all natural lavender soap (for every bar you buy, 5 recycled bars will go to people in need as part of the Clean The World campaign). Jennie also got some special chocolate that she will save for later...

Then the children decided to make as many goofy faces as possible on the PhotoBooth program, which is what some of you saw when you came to pick up your kids. Here are a couple of their mugs.

As St. Patrick's day approaches, we will be doing some themed activities. One of the things we've done was to participate in a St.Patrick's day mail swap. The kids helped me pick out some things that were green, or that reminded us of spring. Then we packed them up in a large envelope and mailed it off to our mail partner (one of Jennie's knitting friends) in toronto. She sent us back a parcel full of stickers, crayons, and colouring pages! The kids loved getting it in the mail. It's always a big deal for them when we open up the mailbox to find the large Package Key. They all jump up and down and scream "Yay! We got a package!!"
Here is a photo of some of the things we got in our package. The colouring pages are already in use. She even sent us a cool St.Patti's door sign, which is on my front door to welcome you.

Field Trips: we will be visiting the home depot this week for kids building projects they are hosting for March Break. We will also be doing various outdoor activities like a treasure hunt with our friends, bird watching for spring birds returning, and a St.Patti's day party with our playmates up the street.

It seems there is way more to this addition than we thought. At the back, where I thought was the last little bit of parking, they are building yet another building. There goes another good view. They will be blocking off a huge chunk of the pond, and now the school yards, park, and wetlands behind it. If I had known it would be so much, I would have brought my camera before for a farewell session. What a shame. C'est la vie. My house used to be someone's farm so I have no right to complain.

Today we had much playing in the snow. Thanks to all the recent snow falls, we've had lots of little snow hills to play on. And being soft powdery snow, it has stayed soft and not turned to ice. Yay!

Here are some pics of today's play. We also took a short nature walk to see if there was anything to find at the pond. Only a small track of something making a circlular pathway through the pond, but we don't know what it might be.

Happy Groundhog day/week everyone! I hear people in Wiarton are now celebrating all week long, as they get about 20,000 visitors each groundhog season. We printed off some groundhog coloring pages, and along with Willie, we did not see our shadows on ground hog day. Early spring is coming - although traditionally the ground hog's weather forecast is only accurate to 37% of the time. It feels like winter has only just begun, but maybe that's because we have so much fun playing in the snow.
